Hi there! Let’s talk teaching.
My name is Casey Walker, and I am a high school English and Yearbook teacher. I’ve spent the last six years teaching everything from College Writing 1-2, 8th-9th Grade English, Pre-AP English 9, and Yearbook at a 7A (2,000 plus students) high school.
I’ve always had a desire to teach and write, and it took me some time to figure out what I wanted to do with my life. In my undergrad days, you would find me taking professional writing courses while editing my college newspaper, managing social media for my university and producing videos for different departments. I also wrote for Good Grit magazine. (I did not get a lot of sleep during those years!)
My last semester of college, I had a life changing moment during my Tutoring Writing course. I loved working with students who wanted to improve their writing. The lightbulb went off in my head: I need to be a teacher.
So at almost 22, I applied to graduate school and worked as a teaching assistant while earning my Master’s in Literature and secondary teaching certificate. I was thrown into teaching college English, but I loved every moment of it.
In my last semester of teaching college English, things soon changed because it was the Spring 2020 semester. I had to say goodbye to my freshmen over Zoom, and I looked into the unknown of what would happen to my secondary teaching internship and graduate degree. While the path looked different than I anticipated, I marched forward with the help of my wonderful mentors and completed my internship and master’s in April 2021.
While my first years of secondary teaching saw lots of sickness, remote and hybrid learning, and let’s face it challenges, I’ve come out on the other side as a flexible teacher who values making each school day one where students have a voice and feel like they can grow in their reading and writing skills.
So, let’s go back to the heading: Let’s talk teaching.
This is my space to share my ideas, projects, and reflections as a teacher. I’m still rather new to my teaching craft, but I strongly believe people of all ages can share useful takeaways. (I mean, I learn from my students each day.)
Take a look around and see if you can find anything that can help you on your teaching journey.
Thanks for stopping by!
